CommunityProfile
The island of
Camiguin is located about 100 miles northern most part of the
Philippines and far north of Luzon. It is found at the east by the
Pacific Ocean and at the west by Balintang Channel. The island is
about 30 statue miles from Manila and 120 nautical miles from the
town of Claveria on the northern coast of Cagayan province.
The island is
usually hit by strong typhoons that make it in accessible. The
heaviest rainfall is from August to November during which
agricultural activities are hampered. The source of living is their
main concern because of the frequency of typhoons. They rely so much
in fishing and farming in as much as most of the residents did not
finish college.
CommunityPrograms
The mounting
problems and difficulties our local communities are experiencing
today makes it imperative for the Colegio de San Juan de Letran to
promote community involvement towards directing and motivating
students and employees to participate in community service and
experience actual service to needy communities as far as the
Camiguin Mission Island in Kalayan, Cagayan. In responding to the
needy, the Colegio established linkage with the community of
Camiguin Isalnd. A well-defined program for the community was
developed in coordination with the missionary Dominican priests
assigned in the island. The following areas are as follows:
1.
Education
This area aims to facilitate the empowerment of the members of the
adopted community especially the youth, through scholarship grants,
and the teachers of the island through skills training.
2.
Health
This area aims to address the problems concerning medical services
especially the unavailability of doctors and the lack of medicines.
This area would be a venue to provide opportunities for free medical
and dental services to the community which lacks basic health
services and facilities.
3.
Environment
This area aims to protect and preserve the island’s forest and
waters through environmental awareness activities and advocacy. This
area is a venue for raising awareness of environmental issues among
the members of the community.
4.
Economic
This area aims to improve the livelihood skills of the members of
the adopted community to increase opportunity for better living.
