Fr. Tamerlane Recuenco Lana, O.P. has been appointed the 80th rector and president of Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
He was born on August 31, 1953 in Legazpi City where, 45 years later, he was named Outstanding Bicolano by the city government. A year later, in 1999, he was cited as an Outstanding Alumus of Aquinas University where he graduated with honors as an elementary pupil and high school student in 1965 and 1971, respectively.
As a young man he would go on to earn two undergraduate degrees: Bachelor in Philosophy from Dominican House of Studies, graduating magna cum laude; and Bachelor in Sacred Theology from Univesity of Santo Tomas as a Rector’s Awardee for Academic Excellence.
He was ordained a priest in 1979.
Yet his was an incessant pursuit of continuing education. Thus he earned a Master of Arts in Higher Religious Studies degree as well as a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from UST in the same year, 1981, gradudating magna cum laude in both.
Father Lana earned his Doctorate in Sacred Theology, summa cum laude, from UST in 1996.
Previously, he was fellow in bioethics at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics of Georgetown Univeristy in Washington D.C. He alsto took post-graduate courses in health care ethics at St. Louis University in Missouri and religious perspectives in bioethics at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas.
Prior to his appointment in Letran, he was rector at UST.
Among his immediate positions, before assuming the rectorship in Letran was as president of the Association of Catholic Universities of the Philippines and the Network of Dominican Schools, Colleges and Universities. Also, he has acted as vice-president for Asia-Pacific of the International Federation of Catholic Univrsities and vice-president of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines. Furthermore, he was public relations officer of the Philippine Association of Centers for Educational Media.
His numerous publications include Still from the Heart, Just from the Heart, and Ethos et Eros: Ethical Link of Love-Making and Life-Giving in Christian Marriage.
Also he has delivered talks and papers here and abroad, most noteworthy of which include The Sacred Responsibility of the Catholic Teachers in 2000 in Thailand during the World Union Congress of Teachers and Case Study on the Challenges Facing the Catholic University, in the same year, sponsored by the IFCU General Assembly in Western Australia.
Father Lana brings to Letran his many years of experience as a priest, administrator, and author – founded on his religious profession and academic learning.
