The Toyota Otis Sparks has moved up to the second slot, a notch below the Montaña Jewelers, on an 8-3 scorecard of the Philippine Basketball League Unity Cup.
The team rallied to a 67-61 triumph over the Rain or Shine Paintmasters in the second game of the cup on May 5, vindicating their loss to the Paintmasters during their first round meeting.
The last time the Sparks stayed on the top four of the standings was in 2003 when they first entered the PBL. Surprisingly then, they landed in the third place where as last year proved the hardest season for them when they stayed at the bottom of the rankings.
As the Unity Cup started, Coach Louie Alas reinforced the team with new faces. Among these are downtown gunners like Jayvee Casio, Chris Baluyot, and Patrick Cabahug.
Aside from Knights Boyet Baustista and company, there have also marked improvements in the performance of Dennis Daa, Christian Coronel (former National Collegiate Athletic Association Rookie of the Year)ff, and the College Ball University of Texas El Paso player, Joe Devance. Devance now leads the team in scoring and rebounding. This 6’6-tall power forward is also a big threat in the three-point area. He took the responsibility in the absence of Marc Macapagal who was earlier drafted in the Philippine Basketball Association.
The Sparks are often compared to the National Basketball Association’s Phoenix Suns whose shortage in big men is compensated by the team’s ability to deliver points through their small-men rotation and fast-paced games.
