Five Knights were elevated to the pros on August 20 as the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) held its 2006 Rookie Draft at the Market! Market! Activity Center in Taguig City.

They are Aaron Aban, Mark “Big Mac” Andaya, Boyet Bautista, Jose “J.R.” Reyes, and Ronjay Enrile.

The Alaska Aces drafted Aban in the first round, seventh overall. Under coach Tim Cone, Aban will have to adjust to the triangle offense game play of the Aces. His flexibility, excellent outside shooting and defensive intensity provide an edge for him to fit in the team’s rotation. Aban will be playing with a former Knight, 2002 PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Willie Miller.

Bautista was chosen by the Purefoods Chunkee Giants in the first round, eight overall.  The 5’6’’ Bautista steered the Knights in their 2003 and 2005 championship titles and was awarded the 2005 finals MVP. His Yoyoy Villamin style of play would add to the team’s offense and additional threat from the 3-point key. For the Purefoods fans, they can expect not just a James Yap-Paul Artadi tandem but also a Kerby Raymundo and Boyet Bautista duo.

His prayers were answered when Andaya was selected ninth by the star studded Talk N’ Text Phone Pals in the first round. Andaya could not believe that he was picked while still holding a Holy Rosary in the draftee room. With Andaya, Asi Taulava and Mark Telan inside, it would be more difficult for other teams to penetrate the shaded area. Mark has developed his low post shots during his amateur years. All he needs to improve is his free throw and perimeter shoots.

Newcomer and former Philippine Basketball League (PBL) franchise Welcoat Dragons has absorbed Reyes as they face the challenges in the pro-league. Reyes played his high school years in Letran and bagged a title in the National Collegiate Athletic Association juniors division. He was also part of the Welcoat Paintmasters 2005 PBL championship team. This young man can take control of the shaded region and even give his defenders a hard time because of his outside shooting.

Enrile was the last pick of the Coca-Cola Tigers to complete their 2006 roster. He was drafted in the second round, seventeenth overall. Enrile played for Letran in 2003 and became the finals MVP. He served as the Knight’s go-to-guy in their title bid on the said year, gunning and dropping points whenever left wide open.
