The Knights averted Nigerian Sam Ekwe and the Red Lions of their first round sweep campaign with a 70-69 upset win in a battle of pride at The Arena, San Juan on July 25. The surprise win gave them a share with San Beda College in the number one spot.
Rey Guevarra, who was almost pulled out of the game, stood out in the remaining 4.4 seconds. He delivered the final winning shot for the Knights set up by RJ Jazul. Guevarra, who played a total of 16 minutes, ended the game with seven points and two boards.
San Beda had one more chance to prevail, but John Melegrito intercepted an inbound pass from Yousif Aljamal meant for Pong Escobal and dashed the ball until the final buzzer sounded. Letran was down by as much as 15 points in the first half but the determined Knights never gave up. Their spirit was boosted when they grabbed a 50-44 lead by the end of the third period. Ekwe piloted the Red Lions back to their rally drilling an expletive alley hoop dunk, getting San Beda back at 55-54.
It was a heart stopping exchange of baskets with one minute and two seconds left. A jumper nailed by Escobal left the blue legion astounded with 19.5 ticks left in the clock.
San Beda coach Frankie Lim appealed for the shot by Escobal to be counted as a three-point shot. After 15 minutes of review of the video replay, National Collegiate Athletic Association Commissioner Chito Narvasa ascertained that Escobal stepped on the three-point arc; hence, counted the shot only as a two-pointer.
Dino Daa and Bryan Faundo led the Knights with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
