Brigham Loren Laceste, junior high school student from class 317 and a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) chess player, and his older brother, Lehi Dan Stephen Laceste a sophomore Accountancy student from the College of Business Administration and Accountancy, ranked second and first runner-up respectively in the Shell National Youth Active Chess Grand Finals.

The tournament was held in Megamall, Ortigas on October 20 and 21. The Shell Active Chess contest is a national chess tournament which caters to young students from different places in the country. The older Laceste joined the Junior division while the younger Lacete competed in the Kiddie division.

The Laceste brothers qualified and represented the Zamboanga leg. In the kiddie division, delegates from Cagayan de Oro (Corpus Christi School) and National Capital Region (University of the East) won the championship and first prize respectively. The younger Laceste earned for himself a trophy and a cash of P10,000.00, while his older brother earned P20,000.00 and a trophy. “It was a difficult tournament with five straight games in one day, leaving me no time to think and prepare for my next strategy. I just thought and applied my experience in the NCAA games and I was really thankful for it,” Brigham said.
