Loren Brigham Laceste (IV-217), Jan Jodily Fronda (III-316), and Cherry Ann Mejia (II-418) won gold, silver, and bronze medals during the ASEAN Age Group Chess Championship in Danang Hotel, Danang City, Vietnam from June 9 to 18.

The students qualified among the 300- plus hopeful students all over the country when the National Chess Elimination was conducted in Mandaluyong City in April.

Laceste, a consistent winner in chess tournaments in the National Collegiate Athletic Associaion fitted in the 16 years and under bracket for boys category along with students from University of the East and College of St. Benilde.

The students emerged in the Top 3 during the elimination. Laceste and his team won one silver and two bronze medals in Vietnam.

Fronda and Mejia, on the other hand, were teammates and entered in the 14 years and under bracket for girls along with another female student from La Union High School. Their team won one gold and two silver medals.

Laceste said the tournament was a tough but worthwhile experience, considering that it was held in another country and competitors were from other countries as well.
