Fred Legrand, a Canadian from Toronto who is married to a Filipina, conceived the idea of bringing his Pinoy-Canadian basketball team to the Philippines for a series of exhibition games.
In June of this year he made a trip to Manila and coordinated with the NCAA and UAAP athletic moderators to make this project possible.
This December, his team of ten players with coach Norman Santigan and assistant coach Ramon Gorospe with parents and relatives, flew to Manila for a series of three-week exhibition games. They are slated to play with the teams of Ateneo, De la Salle, FEU, JRU, Letran, Mapua, San Beda, San Sebastian, UE, UP and Xavier.
In their initial game the Letran Squires, beat them by six points.
More than the game however was the camaraderie generated by the visit. The players had fun interacting with the host class IV-217 of the high school. A sumptuous lunch of kare-kare, crispy pata, lumpia, pancit, green mangoes, leche flan, bibingka and biko reminded the visitors of their Filipino roots and of the Filipino tradition of hospitality. Miss Lita de los Reyes, principal and Miss Sol Boquiren were on hand to assist 217 students in entertaining the visitors.
The Pinoy –Canadian Prospects visit was organized by the Fr. Victor Calvo, O.P. of the Athletics Department.
