The Letran Knights had made it to the elite final four of the Philippine Collegiate Championships League (PCCL) National Basketball tournament with the Ateneo Blue Eagles, De La Salle Green Archers and the San Beda Red Lions.

It eventually became the battle between the UAAP and the NCAA big guns after the nationwide elimination rounds that left 16 colleges and universities in contention for the national title.

The Knights earned the semifinal berth after making a big upset over FEU Tamarraws in a nail-biting game, 94-93 in the quarterfinals with the heroic triple shot by John Melegrito in the remaining seconds of the game.

It was a heartbreaking loss for the heavily-favored Tamarraws but then, the bravery of the knights prevailed to snatched the game and forged a semifinal showdown with the Blue Eagles, the defending PCCL champion.

Earlier, the Knights hurdled their rivals enroute to the final four, winning in the Inter-Zonal qualifying rounds in Ormoc city and defeated San Sebastian College-Cavite, in the round of 16 and over FEU in the quarters.

During the semifinals, the Louie Alas boys never showed surrender and put up a good fight against Ateneo. Trailing by 18 points in the second quarter, the Knights gradually clawed back in the match to narrow the margin and even went ahead, 60-59 below 50 seconds remaining but Ryan Buenafe of the Eagles made the winning shot with 5.5 seconds left. Rey Guevarra missed a long jumper that made the Blue Eagles earned a slot in the finals for the second year in a row, 61-60.

In the other semifinals, the De La Salle Green Archers staged a come from behind win over the San Beda Red Lions, 62-61.

In the championship game, the Green Archers upset the Blue Eagles, 71-62, their very first PCCL title. In the battle for third place, the Knights trounced the Red Lions, 75-67.

This year’s mythical five are JV Casio, Rico Meirhoffer of the Green Archers; Rabeh Al-Husaini, Nonoy Baclao of the Blue Eagles and RJ Jazul of the Letran Knights.

The Archers won P1 million cash prize, the perpetual trophy and the right to represent the Philippines in the World University Games or the Universiade to be held in Serbia next year. The PCCL is organized by the Fil-Oil Flying V of the Villanueva Group of Companies supported by PLDT, KFC, Gourmet Coffee and Smart.
