Norman A. Sugarol of III-316 and with Mike Bugarin, jins from Letran, represented the Philippines in the 2nd Florida Open International Taekwondo Championship in Vero Beach, Florida last December.
There were over 100 taekwondo jins who participated in the tournament and there were teams from California, Miami, Chicago and India.
Sugarol bagged three gold medals in the following events: kyorugi (sparring); poomse (forms); and kyukpa (sparring).
According to Robert Von Der Becke, head of the organizing committee of the event, Sugarol’s final match against a strong player from the California team became one of the highlights of the tournament. Sugarol won the match.
Sugarol was accompanied by the head coach of the Taekwondo Varsity Team of Letran, Angelito Y. Ong. Aside from participating in the competition, they also visited taekwondo gyms like Chung’s Martial Arts College to train and spar.
