NCAA 80th season kicks-off

The 80th season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) officially kicked-off on June 26 at the Araneta Coliseum. This year’s host is University of the Perpetual Help Dalta System (UPHDS) with this year’s theme, “NCAA: Mighty @ 80.”
Eight schools comprise the NCAA league, namely College of Saint Benilde, Colegio De San Juan De Letran, Jose Rizal University, Mapua Institute of Technology, Philippine Christian University, San Beda College, San Sebastian College-Recoletos, and UPHDS.
The coliseum was in full capacity during the opening ceremonies. A video on the history of the NCAA and its contribution to the country’s sports development was featured between rock-n-roll production numbers performed by Chay Agoncillo, Sarah Herboso and Michelle Bayle with the NCAA schools pep squads.
The traditional parade of athletes followed . The Letran Knights’ muse this season is Lourdes Beltran, a sophomore accountancy student. The Knights’ team captain, Ronjay Enrile led the oath of sportsmanship of the athletes. Then each school displayed their signature yells performed by their respective cheering squads. Dr. Ramon Cercado, chancellor of UPHDS delivered the welcome remarks and officially declared the season open.
One of the highlights of the ceremonies was the awarding of the over-all championship last season. For the juniors division, it was awarded to La Salle-Greenhills while in the seniors division, the Colegio captured the title. Rev. Fr. Edwin A. Lao, O.P., and Fr. Victor Calvo, O.P., head of the Athletics Department, accepted the trophy amid the victorious cheering of the Letran community, alumni and supporters at the big dome. Also given recognition was Henry Dagmil of MIT who established a new NCAA record in the long jump, breaking the old record that stood for 35 years.

Meanwhile, prior to the opening of the, NCAA, the Letran community held a pep rally to show its support to the Knight’s campaign this season, followed by a pep concert in the evening which featured True Faith, The Company, Cheddy Guevara, and Arnie Hidalgo.
