Defending champion Letran College came back with another sterling performance as the Knights out-hustled tough rival San Beda College with a score of 70-55, on July 7 at the 80th National Collegiate Athletics Association men’s basketball tournament in Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Still licking their wounds from an 86-76 whipping from Mapua Tech two days before, the Knights intensified their assault with the tandem of top gunner Ronjay Enrile and rookie Mark “Big Mac” Andaya combining 30 points to post their second victory in three outings.
The Red Lions opened up with a telling 9-0 blast courtesy of Yousif Aljamal, Jeff Bombeo and Alexander Angeles to silence the Knights in the first five minutes of the game but the determination of Letran coach Louie Alas’ cagers complimented their big hearts to get back on track.
Consistent transition offense and less turn-overs—as what Alas wanted, were clearly evident in the match as the Muralla-based cagers teamed up for a blazing 13-3 run at the start of the second period to grab San Beda’s 19-14 first quarter lead at 27-22, 5:15 in the clock.
Hoping to get even, Bombeo powered up the Red Lions in the third quarter and scattered seven of his 16 markers, but Andaya, Jonathan Aldave and Boyet Bautista orchestrated blistering offenses to erect their imposing lead at 14, 56-40.
The Red Lions struggled to slice off their double-digit deficit in the final stretch of the game relying on the heroics of Hudencial and Bombeo, but their usually fizzling plays simmered down as they fell into the defensive hands of Letran.
Aaron Aban contributed 10 points to back up Enrile and Andaya while Jonathan Aldave and Paul Alcaraz added eight markers apiece. Bombeo, meanwhile, was the lone Red Lion cager who finished in double figures and got meager support from Aljamal, Angeles and Arjun Cordero who had six points each.
San Beda sank down into its second straight defeat in four outings.
Here are the scores: Letran 70 – Enrile 16, Andaya 14, Aban 10, Alcaraz 8, Aldave 8, Bautista 6, Rodriguez 5, Mondragon 2, Pinera 1, Santos 0, Anabo 0.
