“Tala” Shines Ever So Brightly

Every October the community and school of TALA (translated as ‘Star’) in Caloocan City hold a series of activities in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary and its founder, the American Dominican and army chaplain, Brother Leo Anthony Hofstee, OP.  Decades ago the place was a leper colony cut off from the world, where the people were left on their own, deprived of material and spiritual attention.  Brother Hofstee, upon seeing the situation, never left the place until his death.  He is dearly loved by the people there, and members of his Dominican Province are working for his sainthood.  Today, this thriving community is the mission apostolate of the Dominican Sisters of Our Lady of Remedies, the Dominican Brothers of St. Martin de Porres or “Martinians” and the Dominican Sisters of Blessed Margaret of Castello.  From October 4 to 11, 2009, exhibits were put up, masses were held, and plays were presented about the life of Brother Hofstee and even that of Father Damien of Molokai.
