NCR Leg of 16th Shell Active Chess
The NCR edition of the 16th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship at SM Manila has successfully ended today with 10 year old Paulo Bersamina of La salle Greenhills winning the 14 and under division while 13 year old Jan Emmanuel Garcia of Ateneo de Manila University takes the crown of the juniors division.
For kiddies division, Paulo won on tiebreaks with 6.5 point against Christian Nanola and Jan Jodilyn Fronda. The three qualifiers for the grandfinals set on November. Highlight of the games today was the match between two La Salle NCAA players, Bersamina and Galan in the crucial 6th round with both players going into the game with perfect score of 5 out 5 rounds. Their 6th round match were watched by onlookers and players alike thru the two widescreen provided by the organizers.
In the juniors division, Jan Emmanuel "Jem" Garcia won on tiebreaks against rival Mari Joseph Turqueza of San Sebastian College. Both ended the tourney with a score of 6.5. Third qualifier for the grandfinals is Patrcik Erle Florendo of University of Santo Thomas.

SHELL Title to Laceste
Letran's Loren Brigham Laceste stunned second seed John Robert Bumatay with the black pieces in the final round to top the juniors division in the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship-Tuguegarao leg at Brickstone Mall's Activity Center in Tuguegarao Sunday.
The fifth-ranked Laceste, one of the four players who swept their first four games in the seven-round tournament, drew with John Morazo in the fifth then trounced James Bulication and Bumatay in the last two rounds to come out the solo winner in the 20-and-under category with 6.5 points. |
