Knights Ready for '84
Auralene Dipasupil, Sports Editor, The Lance

Tough and all out. This is the mindset running in the heads of all the schools heading in to the much anticipated 84th season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) kick off at the end of the month of June. Basketball-undeniably the most popular sport in the country today aside from boxing-definitely makes or breaks the school's chances of making headway into the collegiate basketball scene.

The years go on and on: 1999. 2000, 2001 and 2002. With sixteen championship crown in the senior's basketball division and a double-over all title, the passion and desire of winning still runs in the blood of Letranites. Having held the most championship crown in the history of NCAA basketball, the Knights still prove to be the team to watch out for, the squad other schools should worry about, and should train more for.

Under wily mentor Coach Louie Alas, who has steered the Knights three championships in six year, the Knights have been relentlessly pushing thmeselves to the maximum in their bid to regain lost glory. The Knights have been gearing up for the upcoming season the entire summer; sweating in trainings all day, running plays, executing defensive patterns, and going for the rebounds.

Admitting the fact that Knights do lack size and heft against other schools this year, Coach Alas still trains his players by highlighting his weaknesses anbd working on thos as a team. "I do believe that whatever you do in training you can do better in the game," said Alas. He analyzes each of his wards' weaknesses, and from there helps remedy it.

The Knights will have their hands full against all other teams this coming season 84, especially with the departure of some of their key players from last year's Letran final cast. Coach Alas will pin his hopes on his dynamic backcourt, composed of RJ Jazul, Rey Guevarra and Rey Dangcal. Manning the paint of the Knights will be front lines Dino Daa, Alvyn Cabonce, and John Foronda.

Although early forecast reveal a slim chance of the Knights finishing at the upperhalf of the standings this season, Coach Alas never loses hope. What motivates the team more as he says, is the drive to prove odds wrong and eventually win back another crown for the Colegio.

TAEKWONDO
The senior taekwondo jins (men and women) with head coach Angelito Ong participated in the 2008 Aguila’s Invitational Taekwondo Championships last June 14 at Arroyo Valley High School, Riverside in San Bernardino, California, USA. They competed in two events, sparring and poomsae competitions.
In the poomsae event, head coach, Angelito Ong, Angel Ong, Jr., Jan Christopher Rivera and Elisa Joy Hilario won gold medals and Carlo Mikael Roxas bagged a bronze. Ong, Jr. won another gold in the sparring event, while Hilario won a silver and Rivera and Roxas got each a bronze medal.

CHESS
Loren Brighan Laceste won the final round and topped the juniors division in the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship-Tuguegarao leg at Brickstone Mall’s Activity Center in Tuguegarao last July 8. He swept the first four games in the seven-round tournament and came out the solo winner in the 20-and-under category.
Laceste was also team bronze medalist in standard chess, team silver medalist in blitz and team bronze in rapid chess during the 9th Asean Age Group Chess Championships held in Danang Vietnam last June 9 to 18.
